Welcome to Ask Betty! This week were going to be discussing a great health insurance question Diane_RN1990 sent in.

To start off, lets look at Dianes situation which involves Family Health Insurance. She is currently enrolled in an agency coverage plan with coverage rate of $17/week, which is very affordable. But, when she tries to add her husband to the same plan, the rate rises significantly to over $600 a month!

As we heard from Diane_RN1990, her agency coverage costs only $17/week for individual coverage but to add their spouse for Family Health Insurance, it skyrockets to $163/week, that‘s a whopping $600 a month!

That‘s a shocking discrepancy that makes no sense; considering the price tag for individual coverage is drastically less. So, that leads us to the question, is there a way to lower the cost of health insurance when you add a spouse?

Alternatives to Expensive Employer Family Health Insurance

The answer is YES! Even though an agency or staff employer is not required to contribute to the cost when you add a family member, there are ways to find an individual plan that would be more affordable for your spouse, than Family Health Insurance with your Employer.

There are much better options available; even something more than half the price of the agency‘s policy.  There IS such a thing as affordable Family Health Insurance, you just need an insurance agent with the skills of a Ninja!

Pricey Family Health Insurance vs Affordable Individual Plans

Another thing to consider when taking out health insurance is shopping around. You want to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.

Look for companies that offer discounts or other incentives when signing up, and look for those that have a wide network of providers in your area.

Consider also the coverage you are getting. How much of a deductible do you have? How much out-of-pocket cost will you have? How much is the copay? Splitting your spouses coverage away from your Employer ALSO allows you BOTH better access to exactly the type of benefits you EACH are better served with.

Making Family Health Insurance Affordable

It is also important to read through all the fine print of the plan before purchasing. There could be certain exclusions or age limits, and it‘s important to know what is covered.

And finally, always make sure you choose a plan that is affordably priced, offers adequate coverage, and fits your needs. So, don‘t get discouraged by higher premiums or the lack of family contribution from your agency. There ARE options available & you can access ALL of yours AND have your OWN personal Insurance Ninja.
