For many years it’s been well-known that many, many Employers grossly overcharge for Family coverage.  Often coverage is free or nearly free for the Nurse, but if you add a Spouse they’ll charge you $600 for JUST the spouse.  Even if that spouse is only 29 years old.  $600 for a 29-year-old?!?!  That’s nearly TRIPLE what their coverage SHOULD cost.

"The Family Glitch"

In years past, large families and low-income families were left in the situation of not being to afford their Employer’s family coverage AND because one of the spouses in the family has Employer options NONE of the family members could use their Tax Credits for affordable health coverage.  Many families had no choice but to go WITHOUT any coverage at all for their families!  This became known as the “Family Glitch law.

In 2022, Congress passed new laws that were enacted in Jan 2023 that now provide a Formula that can be utilized to determine if your Employer’s plan is legally UNaffordable.  And if your Employer’s family coverage iS deemed unaffordable, now there IS recourse for the family that will provide them with coverage that meets their financial needs

One example is if your household income is $80K, then the lowest priced family plan from your Employer would need to be UNDER $608/month for the government to deem it “Affordable”
