Ninja Betty's Lapse Supplemental Tips!
Lapse Supplemental?
Most people are familiar with Supplementals like Dental and Vision, but did you know there are ALSO popular Supplementals that many Nurses find a great option to partner with their Agency’s coverage to round out their benefits & eliminate lapses between assignments?
Factors to Consider
Since health insurance costs more the older you get, nurses over the age of 50 may find getting their own overage outside of any Agency would TRIPLE their costs. Also with some pre-existing conditions, group employer plans from an Agency might have more of the benefits needed than the coverage they get on their own.
Fill the Gaps
In such scenarios, it may make more financial sense to partner a lapse Supplemental with their agency’s benefits. This would give the nurse additional benefits for unexpected things between assignments, such as injuries or hospitalization. An added value to this option is those same Supplemental benefits would ALSO pay your Agency’s deductible, co-insurance, AND max-out-of-pocket for any injuries while ON assignment too!
Under $99
This type of Supplemental is typically under $99/month per family and in conjunction with the Federal COBRA law will round out the benefits for travel nurses
You Bet Your Nunchucks!
The COBRA law is a beautiful “get out of jail” card for travel nurses! This is a helpful law for travelers because it gives you the right to take any Agency’s (or staff employer’s) coverage with you when you leave. You legally have up to 90 days to decide IF you want to take their coverage.
Your COBRA Rights
When your agency coverage “officially” ends, that’s when your COBRA clock starts ticking. Within those 90 days if you have no medical needs/expenses then you pay nothing BUT if something DOES happen during that period THEN you’d have to pay the 1-3 months previous monthly premiums to get the benefits. (Well worth it if anything “Catastrophic” happened).
90-Day Warning
Because of this law, we advise our travel nurses to never go more than three months (90 days) between assignments.
Lapse Supplemental & the COBRA law is an extremely affordable combination to BOTH take advantage of more affordable Agency coverage AND eliminate lapses in coverage between assignments.
