PM Questions to Ask Betty

Welcome to this week‘s episode ofAsk Betty!, Episode 148 focusing on REDUCED SALARIES.

We have a great question from rnLondon_95 who asks why their hourly wage is lowered for taking their agency‘s health insurance plan.

Q from YOU to Ninja HQ

I get paid five dollars less an hour and have to pay $39 a week for insurance with my agency. Why the reduced salary?

Reduced Salaries - Hit You Right In the Wallet

At first, this question might seem a bit confusing but it is a relatively common occurrence for those who choose to receive health insurance through their employer or agency. The truth is, the agency will have to pay at least 50% of the cost of your coverage which is why they end up cutting your wages to make up for it. When you take Individual coverage with an Employer, you automatically COST that Employer $500-600 a month!

This means that along with a REDUCED SALARY, you will STILL have payroll deductions for a part of the cost of your coverage each week, making the whole deal quite costly.

In total, you are looking at approximately $300 to $800 per month in lost wages in addition to your weekly $156 insurance deduction. This adds up to an estimated total of $876 a month.

Seek Alternatives to Escaping a Reduced Salary

It is understandable why rnLondon_95 might be feeling a bit frustrated. As stated above, it is commonplace for these kinds of deductions to be taken from someone’s wage for taking agency or employer health insurance. Though it can be costly, it might be worth considering exactly how much you are losing each month with the deductions AND reduced salary and whether or not there could be another form of health insurance you could use as an alternative.
